1. When using a gas grill, turn the gas on before you open the cover. Not true! Once the gas is on it can collect under the cover. When you open the top and add a flame, the result is often a huge explosive grill fire. Instead, open the lid, turn the gas on, and light the gas.
2. To get the crusted leftover meat and fat off the grill, simply turn the flame as high as possible and wait 10 minutes. Carbonized fat can melt as it heats up and drip into the flames creating a BBQ fire much bigger than expected. The excessive buildup of heat can also damage the body of the grill and warp it. Instead of using heat to clean the grill, scrub vigorously with a metal grill brush.
3. When it’s raining, the garage is the perfect place to BBQ. Grilling experts suggest the garage may not have enough cross ventilation to be a fire-safe environment for cooking. Additionally, BBQ smoke damage can result as the smoke builds up against the ceiling. Instead, choose an outdoor location for grilling.
4. Grilling can be done anywhere the grill can be set up. Dangerously untrue. The grill can become exceedingly hot and requires a minimum of three feet from any type of flammable surface. This can include building walls and wooden decking.
